The Mesabi Family YMCA and American Red Cross Lifeguard Program prepares individuals for a lifeguard position. The purpose of the Lifeguarding Course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical service (EMS) personnel take over. The course includes certification in: Lifeguarding and First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and Emergency Oxygen Administration. Participants must attend all scheduled classes and pass both a written and water skills test. This course may be audited for individuals interested in the information, skills and challenge.
