Who
This program is designed for students in 3rd through 6th grade from Virginia and Mt. Iron Schools. Students are bused to the Y. We focus on a safe and fun environment where kids are able to use the Y facility for swimming, gym time, community involvement and STEM education.
When
Monday-Friday, from school dismissal to 5:30pm. The After-School Program will run only when school is in session. We are not open on snow days.

Yes! Click the Register for Programs button in the upper right hand corner of this page. Click log-in to access your account or choose Find My Account if you are already a member. Search for BASE After-school. Select the days your child will be attending and answer the questions (if you are a returning most of your information should be saved from previous years and all you’ll need to do is update any changes of address or contact information if there have been any changes). Once registered, you can view a summary of your enrollment, change your days as you need to, and make payments or schedule payments
Your child will ride the bus from their school to the Y. Make sure your teacher is aware that they are going to the After school care at the Y. For Roosevelt students that would be bus #12. For Merritt please contact the school office as the bus number changes frequently. The buses drop them right off at the front doors of the Y and our staff is there to greet them.
Pick up will be at the Mesabi Family YMCA. Pick up areas withing the Y change depending on the activity. The Multi-purpose room is the main meeting area for the kids. Kids will likely be in the classroom, gym, swimming pool or outside at the playground. If you are not familiar with the YMCA or are not sure where they are please ask the front desk of the Y and they can point you in the right direction.
It is required that a parent signs their child out. We want to have verbal and visual contact with each parents at the finish of each day so we can pass along any important information.
It is required that your child is registered ahead of time. If a child is not on the roster, they will not be able to participate. They will remain in the school office and parents will be notified. You can register up to 12:00pm on the day of the program by calling ahead to the Y's front desk or to the Youth and Family Services Director.
To cancel your child’s enrollment, you must notify the YMCA by 12:00pm on the day of the program. If your child is signed up for a day and can no longer attend, you will not get a refund if the change was not submitted by noon on the program date.
Here’s a list of things that your child will need for the program
- Bring a water bottle, layers of clothes to accommodate for changes of weather or accidents, weather appropriate footwear for outside play, and any medicine or required medical devices such as Epi-pens and inhalers.
- For Swim Days, bring a swim suit and towel. Notice will be given prior.
- NOT allowed: valuables, bikes/skate boards, or any electronic devices.
Payments are due the Friday before the next week starts. You can make a payment of any size at any time as long as it is prior to the Friday before your week. For example, you can pay one lump sum for all of the After School Program, set up bi-monthly or weekly payments – either make the payment on your online account, stop in to see us, give us a call, or set up scheduled payments to automatically withdrawn on certain dates.
Yes! You can always apply for our Open Doors Scholarships. Funds are not guaranteed as they go by your income and are a first come, first serve basis. Click here to find out more information.
